Blood tests (pathology)

A small sample of blood, usually taken from a vein in the arm, that is checked in the laboratory.

How it works

A small sample of blood is taken from a vein, and the laboratory measures what is in it — blood cells, sugar, fats, salts, hormones and more.

  1. 1A band on the upper arm makes the vein easy to find.
  2. 2A thin needle fills one or more small tubes — about a minute.
  3. 3The laboratory measures what is in the sample.

What happens, step by step

  1. Step 01

Sit down and roll up a sleeve

A band is tied around the upper arm so the vein is easy to find.

  2. Step 02

    Clean the skin

The inside of the elbow is wiped with an antiseptic swab.

  3. Step 03

    Take the sample

A thin needle draws blood into one or more small tubes. It takes about a minute.

  4. Step 04

    Press and go

Cotton is pressed on the spot for a few minutes. The tubes go to the laboratory.
