ECG

A recording of the heart's electrical activity, taken through small sticky pads placed on the chest, arms and legs. It is painless.

How it works

Each heartbeat starts with a tiny electrical signal. Sticky pads on the skin pick it up and the machine draws it as a wave on paper or a screen.
123
  1. 1Six small pads go across the chest.
  2. 2Four more on the arms and legs — ten in all.
  3. 3The heart's electrical signal is drawn as a wave. Nothing enters the body.
