Ultrasound / Sonography

Pictures of organs made with sound waves, using a gel and a small hand-held probe moved over the skin. It uses no radiation.

How it works

A hand-held probe sends sound waves into the body and listens for their echoes, which a computer turns into a live picture. There is no radiation.
