MRI

Detailed pictures of the body made with a strong magnet and radio waves while you lie still inside a tube-shaped machine. It uses no radiation.

How it works

A strong magnet and radio waves make the body's tissues give off faint signals, which a computer turns into detailed pictures. There is no radiation.
123
  1. 1A ring of strong magnets surrounds the tube — no radiation.
  2. 2Radio waves make tissues send back faint signals.
  3. 3You lie on a table that slides inside and keep still.

What happens, step by step

  1. Step 01

    Safety checklist

Because the magnet is very strong, you are asked about pacemakers, implants, metal clips and any metal in the body.

  2. Step 02

    Remove all metal

Jewellery, watches, phones, cards and hairpins stay outside the room.

  3. Step 03

    Into the scanner

You lie on a table that slides into a tube. The machine knocks loudly, so earplugs or headphones are given.

  4. Step 04

    Keep still

You stay as still as you can while each set of pictures is taken. You can talk to the staff at any time.
